Major Champions Join Valero Texas Open Field

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Valero Texas Open field commitments this week include the addition of five players who have won one or more of golf’s major championships. The tournament will be the final PGA TOUR stop prior to the year’s first major championship, the Masters Tournament in Augusta, GA.

Pledging to compete in the tournament April 1-4 are Vijay Singh, Charl Schwartzel, Jim Furyk, Danny Willett and Henrik Stenson.

This group of major champions has accumulated a total of seven titles across the Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, U.S. Open and Open Championship. They join previously announced major champions Jason Dufner, Padraig Harrington and Jimmy Walker.

Singh, who won the Masters Tournament (2000) and two PGA Championships (1998, 2004), was also the 2008 PGA TOUR FedExCup Champion. Furyk has a U.S. Open Championship to his credit along with the 2010 PGA TOUR FedEx Cup title. The Masters Tournament was also won by Schwartzel (2011) and Willett (2016). Stenson, the 2013 FedExCup Champion, hoisted the Claret Jug in 2016 when he won the Open Championship.

To this point, Tournament officials have announced 14 players in the Valero Texas Open, who have been invited to compete in this year’s Masters Tournament the week following, including: Abraham Ancer, Cameron Champ, Corey Conners (2019 VTO Champion), Tony Finau, Matt Kuchar, Martin Laird (2013 VTO Champion), Ryan Palmer, Scottie Scheffler, Schwartzel, Singh, Stenson, Walker, Bernd Wiesberger and Willett.

PGA TOUR players have until Friday, March 26 at 4:00 p.m. Central Time to commit and can withdraw at any time.

With the primary focus on the health and well-being of the community and all involved with the tournament, the spectator and sponsor experience at the event has been reimagined to ensure all State, local and PGA TOUR safety protocols are observed. Upgraded spectator hospitality experiences will be open-air, provide ample space for social distancing, and allow for intimate viewing while taking advantage of miles of front row seats throughout the golf course, along the rope line.

The Dash to the VTO presented by Humana Military will be held Saturday, March 27, leading up to tournament week. Participation for the popular 5K and one-mile run/walk event on the TPC San Antonio grounds will be limited to the first 700 participants which includes staggered corrals of groups of 25 to observe and manage social distancing safely. A fun event for the whole family, this race will also help raise funds and awareness for the Valero Texas Open’s Champions fore Charity fundraising campaign. Registration for this event is now open.
