Rory McIlroy - World No. 2 & Reigning FedExCup Champion - Commits To 2020 Valero Texas Open

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Rory McIlroy, the reigning FedExCup champion and 2019 PGA TOUR Player of the Year, will be returning to the Valero Texas Open for the first time since 2013, tournament officials announced today.

“I am excited to get back to the Valero Texas Open,” said McIlroy, who will be World No. 1 on Monday. “I have fond memories of TPC San Antonio and look forward to returning there in April.”

The 2020 edition of the Valero Texas Open, which is scheduled for April 2-5 at TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course, will be the second of a 10-year contract extension between the PGA TOUR and Valero Energy Corporation; a deal which repositioned the tournament in a coveted slot on the TOUR schedule the week preceding The Masters.

“This commitment from Rory further signifies the elevated stature of the Valero Texas Open on the PGA TOUR,” explained the tournament’s Executive Director, Larson Segerdahl. “We are thrilled to continue to showcase the world’s best golfers to our hometown fans right here in San Antonio and a worldwide television audience.”

In his only start at the Valero Texas Open, McIlroy finished second seven years ago. After an opening-round 72, he birdied the final three holes during the second round to get into contention and was tied for fourth entering the final round. He shot 66 on Sunday and finished two shots shy of winner Martin Laird, who shot a final round 63.

Since his last start in San Antonio, McIlroy has won 12 times on the PGA TOUR for a total of 18 career victories. Last year, he won the FedExCup for the second time, joining Tiger Woods as the only two players to do so. He also became the first player to win THE PLAYERS Championship and FedExCup in the same season. The 30-year-old has 26 victories worldwide.

Players have until Friday, March 27 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time to commit to the Valero Texas Open. They can withdraw from the tournament at any time.
