Close Ties To The Presidents Cup
| 2015 VTO champion Jimmy Walker is currently 11th in the FedExCup Playoff standings, and will play for the United States team in Korea. |
Earlier this week on Tuesday, The Presidents Cup teams were finalized and six of the competitors have close ties to the Valero Texas Open. Starting with the captains, Jay Haas and Nick Price are both past champions of the tournament. Haas, who will be captaining the United States team, won in San Antonio in 1982 and 1993 while International captain Price won here in 1992. Australians Adam Scott (2010) and Steven Bowditch (2014) are members of the International team. 2015 champion and San Antonio resident Jimmy Walker along with two-time VTO champion Zach Johnson (2008, 2009) will play for the United States team. The Presidents Cup, a team match play competition featuring 24 of the world’s top golfers – 12 from the United States and 12 from around the world, excluding Europe – is held every two years, and since 1996 has alternated between the United States and international venues. This year’s match is scheduled for October 5-11 in Incheon, South Korea.
This is an off-week in the FedExCup Playoffs before the top 70 in the rankings resume next week in the Chicago area to decide what top 30 players will compete in the finals in Atlanta.
Overall, the 2015 VTO field included 8 of 12 U.S. Team Members and 4 of 12 International Team Members. The complete President’s Cup teams are as follows (players who participated in the 2015 VTO are in bold):
UNITED STATES TEAM: Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Jimmy Walker, Zach Johnson, Jim Furyk, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Matt Kuchar, Chris Kirk, Bill Haas, Phil Mickelson
INTERNATIONAL TEAM: Jason Day, Louis Oosthuizen, Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyama, Branden Grace, Marc Leishman, Anirban Lahiri, Charl Schwartzel, Thongchai Jaidee, Danny Lee, Steven Bowditch, Sangmoon Bae

Upon winning this year’s Valero Texas Open, Jimmy Walker earned 500 points and currently is ranked 11th and will likely make the top 30. VTO runner-up Jordan Spieth is currently ranked second and third-place finisher Daniel Summerhays is 26th. Past VTO champions Steven Bowditch is at 22nd and Brendan Steele at 60th. Players who have finished second in San Antonio through the years who are among the top 70 and will play in Chicago next week include Charley Hoffman at No. 6, Justin Rose at No. 13 and Rory McIlroy at No. 17.

Birdies for Charity: 2016 Registration Is Open
The Valero Texas Open’s Birdies for Charity®, a fundraising program designed in 1997, gives participating charities and schools a unique platform to engage potential donors and generate contributions. A no-cost program, Birdies for Charity, gives 100% of the funds raised back to the participating organizations.
Funds are generated by soliciting pledges from individuals and corporations. Birdies for Charity is like a walk-a-thon, but instead of donating per mile, participants make a pledge for every birdie made at the Valero Texas Open. The 2015 Valero Texas Open had 2,103 birdies made, so a pledge of $0.01 yielded a donation of $21.03. Donors also have the ability to make a one-time donation with the flexibility to pay in advance or to be billed after the tournament. Donations are accepted from anywhere around the world and are tax deductible, thanks to the Valero Texas Open’s non-profit 501(c)3 status.
The 2015 fundraising campaign, which combined efforts of one hundred fifty-four charities and schools, grew just over 14% since 2014 generating a record-breaking $2.1M with a collections rate of 99.3% from donor commitments. These hardworking organizations were awarded an additional $120,000 combined, based on performance, through incentive programs funded by the Valero Texas Open and its corporate partners.
Registration to participate in the 2016 fundraising campaign for charities and schools began earlier this week and is underway. We are excited to enhance this program and increase the incentive funds to $200,000 which will be distributed to the participating charities based on performance within the fundraiser.
If you know of a charity or school that isn’t already involved, please encourage them to participate in this great community initiative. Early registrants will receive custom pre-printed pledge forms. The kick off events will be hosted in San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Austin from October 21-23. Fundraising will officially begin October 26. Click here to learn more and register your organization.
