Did You Know?! | |
| | An 18 year old Jordan Spieth made his Valero Texas Open debut in 2012, finishing tied for 41st. |
| During the 2012 Valero Texas Open, John Huh had one of the best bounce backs in recent memory. In the first round he shot a 77 that included a front-nine score of 44. At the time, he was 14 shots out of the lead. However, with rounds of 68-67-69, he not only made the cut but he finished tied for second in the final standings. Huh would go on to win the PGA TOUR’s Rookie of the Year Award later that year. | |
| 2012 also marked the appearance of an amateur from Dallas named Jordan Spieth. In Spieth’s first appearance at the Valero Texas Open, he finished tied for 41st. | |
| During the final round of the 2014 Valero Texas Open, eventual champion Steven Bowditch wore a green shirt. With his victory, Bowditch earned his first invitation to play in the Masters Tournament. When asked if there was any particular reason he wore green on that final day, he responded: “No, actually. It was the only shirt I had left that wasn’t dirty.” | |
| The great Ben Hogan, at age 17, played his first professional golf tournament at the 1930 Texas Open. He missed the cut that year, but in 1946 he won his one and only Texas Open. | |

Game Show Night to Debut at VTO
The Valero Texas Open, together with the PGA TOUR Wives Association, is excited to announce the addition of Game Show Night, a fun and engaging dinner event that will be held at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa on Monday, April 18 from 6-10 p.m., as a part of the Valero Texas Open tournament week activities.
Proceeds from this event support PGA TOUR Wives Association initiatives and Valero Texas Open’s annual fundraiser, Birdies for Charity®. PGA TOUR Wives Association supports needy children and their families throughout the country through hands-on community outreach events and monetary donations. Birdies for Charity® is a no-cost program that gives 100% of the funds raised to the participating charities and schools. All funds are generated by soliciting pledges from individuals and corporations which maximizes donations for charities through financial incentives funded by tournament proceeds.
Game Show Night will provide sponsors and guests an intimate and exclusive forum to interact with PGA TOUR players and their spouses. During the Game Show Night, VIP guests will enjoy socializing at a cocktail reception and plated dinner followed with entertainment led by PGA TOUR professionals and their spouses. They will participate in three game show formats-- Family Feud, the “Not So” Newlywed Game, and Win, Lose or Draw -- giving those in attendance a glimpse of the true personalities of these widely recognized athletes.
Tables of 10 are now available for purchase to entertain guests, clients or business associates, with a select number of tables to include a PGA TOUR professional and his spouse during dinner. Please contact us at (210) 345-3847 to secure your table and a chance to dine with a PGA TOUR professional competing in the Valero Texas Open.

Valero Junior Texas Open Receives AJGA Award
| | 2015 Valero Junior Texas Open Champions, Chaithra Katamneni and Garett Reband. |
The American Junior Golf Association has presented the 2015 Valero Junior Texas Open with the Most Improved Tournament of the Year Award. In 2015, the Valero Texas Open came on board as the title sponsor of the event and helped to provide a PGA TOUR experience for the players.
Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. Awards are also given to the events with the highest media and social media participation. Finally, the AJGA recognizes the year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new event, best Junior All-Star tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year. Tournament awards for the 2015 season will be presented on-site at the 2016 tournament.
“On behalf of the Valero Texas Open, we are humbled that in our first year as title sponsor of the Valero Junior Texas Open it was selected as the AJGA’s Most Improved Tournament for 2015,” said Valero Texas Open Executive Director Larson Segerdahl. “We made significant strides this past year to elevate the stature of the event -- not the least of which was moving the tournament to TPC San Antonio and the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa.”
In 2015, the event provided a PGA TOUR tournament feel with a press conference, player lockers, players’ lounge area, pairings reveal party, access to the beautiful TPC San Antonio and JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa facilities which included a pool, tennis courts, workout facilities and several restaurants. In addition, the Boys and Girls Division champions were awarded exemptions into the 2016 Junior PGA Championship.
“The event provided the juniors with a special PGA TOUR experience and we are thrilled to partner with such a historic event as the Valero Texas Open,” said AJGA Senior Regional Director, South Central, Darren Nelson.
With full support from the TPC San Antonio facility and the Valero Texas Open, players, parents and coaches enjoyed a week geared towards offering an experience unlike any other. Local community members came out to support the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant and local charities through the Valero Junior Texas Open Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament.
“Thanks to Valero and our many corporate sponsors, not only were we able to conduct a wonderful tournament, but we were able to further the mission of the Valero Texas Open and use this platform to raise even more funds for worthy charities, including the AJGA’s ACE Grant program and The First Tee of Greater San Antonio,” Segerdahl said.
The Valero Junior Texas Open will celebrate its 25th year on the AJGA schedule from July 11-14 in 2016 at TPC San Antonio, solidifying itself as an opportunity for local juniors to compete at a high level of competition.
