Tim Finchem has served as PGA TOUR Commissioner for the past 22 years and will be retiring at the end of this month. Under his leadership, Commissioner Finchem grew the PGA TOUR to record purses, charitable giving, and fan growth. The development of golf into a global game has been an important part of his legacy, from creating the Presidents Cup and World Golf Championships, to the PGA TOUR’s role in bringing golf back to the Olympic Games.

Additionally, Commissioner Finchem has expanded the PGA TOUR’s footprint through the launch of PGA TOUR Canada, Latinoamerica, and China. Charitable giving over the last 22 years has been nearly $2.2 billion under the Commissioner’s watch. He also launched several “Grow the Game” initiatives, most notably launching The First Tee in 1997. There are now approximately 180 chapters worldwide – including the very successful First Tee of Greater San Antonio.

We thank Commissioner Finchem for his years of dedication, service, leadership and vision he brought forth to the PGA TOUR. The Valero Texas Open wishes him and his family all the best as he enters this new chapter in his life.

The New Year will ring in with the newly appointed Commissioner, Jay Monahan, who came to the PGA TOUR from Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in June 2008 as Executive Director of THE PLAYERS Championship. He has served as Deputy Commissioner since April 1, 2014 and most recently assumed the additional title of COO earlier this year. Monahan has been a steadfast supporter of the Valero Texas Open over the years and he is no stranger to San Antonio – having attended the tournament with frequency.

We are excited about the future of the PGA TOUR under Monahan’s leadership and wish him well in his new role.

Monahan has served as Executive Director of THE PLAYERS Championship, Deputy Commissioner & COO of the PGA TOUR.

We are looking for volunteering enthusiasts with a passion to help and together create a fantastic Valero Texas Open experience for PGA TOUR players, corporate sponsors and spectators alike. The success of the Valero Texas Open is due in part to over 1,700 volunteers who serve on approximately 30 committees.

The Valero Texas Open was honored by the PGA TOUR at the TOUR’s Tournament Meetings on December 7.

The Valero Texas Open earned an award for Best On-Site Staging during the 2016 tournament at TPC San Antonio. The award encompasses the overall staging plan, presentation and branding at the event.

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I am pleased to congratulate the Valero Texas Open for the special recognition it has received,” said Andy Pazder, PGA TOUR chief tournaments and competitions officer. “The tournament staff should be extremely proud of its hard work and for being recognized as the best among its peers on the TOUR.”

We’ve taken advantage of our setting haven built and decorated major venues to match the authentic, Texas-style surroundings. Our smaller structures, such as concession stands and expo spaces, were designed to maintain this specific look and feel. The use of custom materials and attention to detail elevated the theme and presentation across the property. As a result, players, sponsors, fans, and volunteers all received a genuine look at the Lone Star State.

“It is an honor to receive this award on behalf of the of the Valero Texas Open and everyone that helps to make our tournament stand out for its one-of-a-kind personality and style that is truly an extension of San Antonio,” said Larson Segerdahl, Valero Texas Open executive director.

On Monday December 12, the Valero Texas Open concluded its third annual “12 Days of Giving”. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Participating organizations from Birdies for Charity received $10 for every Valero Texas Open ticket purchased online between Dec. 1-12. The Valero Texas Open matched up to an additional $500 per charity. This special campaign sold over 554 tickets, supporting forty-eight various charities over the twelve days.

And a special congratulations to John Jay High School AF JROTC for selling the most tickets! They are awarded a $2,500 bonus!! The JROTC plans to use the funds to assist in getting new gear and help with expenses for upcoming competitions. Congratulations!!

In total the “12 Days of Giving” campaign helped us raise more than $12,000 for incredibly worthy causes…now that is the true holiday spirit!
