Valero Texas Open Year-End | |
The PGA TOUR is now taking a small break before the 2015-2016 schedule resumes in Hawaii the second week in January. Here are a few interesting tidbits as we look back on the 2015 calendar season:
| Our champion Jimmy Walker had a solid year with his second career multiple-win season. |
| Did you know? There were 24 wins by players in their 20’s this season marking the most in a single season on the PGA TOUR in the last 46 years (since 1970). The prior record of 23 wins took place in 1974. The last five champions of the Valero Texas Open were in their 30s. | |
| The United States and Australia accounted for 36 of the 47 total victories on the 2014-15 PGA TOUR schedule. Jason Day accounted for 5 of the 6 wins by Australians. Steven Bowditch, winner of the 2014 Valero Texas Open, was the other Australian winner with his victory at the AT&T Byron Nelson. | |
| Jordan Spieth, who finished second at this year’s Valero Texas Open with a 7-under-par 281 score, played in 24 official stroke play events this season and finished with a TOUR leading total score to par of 182 under par. Just how good is this? In the last 24 years on TOUR, only one other player who played less than 24 events was more under par in a single season. In 2000, Tiger Woods made 19 stroke play starts and finished at 263 under par. | |
| In the first seven events of the 2015-2016 PGA TOUR wrap-around season, three of the winners competed at the Valero Texas Open this year—Justin Thomas (CIMB Classic), Russell Knox (WGC-HSBC Champions) and Kevin Kisner (The RSM Classic). Graeme McDowell, winner of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba was in the field but had to withdraw due to injury midway through his first round. | |
| Our champion Jimmy Walker had a solid year with his second career multiple-win season. He advanced to the FedExCup Playoffs for the sixth straight season, made it through to The TOUR Championship for the second consecutive year and finished the season ranked 16th in the FedExCup standings. Walker also made his first Presidents Cup team as a member of the victorious United States’ squad. To start the 2015-2016 season Walker was 50th at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in October and in the unofficial Hero World Challenge he finished 8th. Next up is Hawaii for our 2015 champion. | |
