Valero Texas Open 2016 Monday Open Qualifying To Be Held On-Site At TPC San Antonio—AT&T Canyons Course

The Final Four Spots Available in 156 Player Field Monday of Tournament Week

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Southern Texas PGA and Valero Texas Open officials announce today that the traditional off-site Monday Event Qualifying competition will be held on-site at the TPC San Antonio—AT&T Canyons Course Monday, April 18 this year.

This will be the final chance for players--not otherwise exempt-- to qualify for the Valero Texas Open, which is held on the adjacent TPC San Antonio—JW Marriott Course. Eighteen-hole Monday qualifier competitions are held each week at PGA TOUR open tournaments and award the top four competitors a spot in the tournament’s final field. The local PGA section manages a majority of the qualifiers each week.

“Southern Texas PGA considers it a privilege to work with The PGA TOUR and the staff at TPC San Antonio in conducting the qualifiers for the Valero Texas Open,” said Mike Ray, PGA, and Executive Director Southern Texas PGA. “I can’t imagine a more unique or special opportunity than what TPC San Antonio has offered us and the competitors for the Monday qualifier. It will be memorable for all involved, and even more so for those fortunate enough to earn a spot in the tournament.”

“We are very excited to have the Monday Qualifying competition on the grounds of JW Marriott and TPC San Antonio this year as one of the ways to kick-off the tournament week,” said Larson Segerdahl, Valero Texas Open Executive Director. “Through the years this tournament has had a wonderful relationship with the Southern Texas PGA and we are glad that we can support their efforts in making the qualifier a fun and exciting experience for the players trying to get into the field.”

“As the host site for the Valero Texas Open, it is our sincere pleasure to work on this exciting component to tournament week, said Matt Flory, General Manager, TPC San Antonio. “We are thrilled to partner with the Southern Texas PGA and the Valero Texas Open on the Monday qualifier, and believe the ATT Canyons Course will serve as a great backdrop for the excitement.”

This will mark the first time the Monday Qualifier for the Valero Texas Open has been held at the TPC San Antonio. Last year, it was at The Club at Comanche Trace.

The Southern Texas PGA will conduct two Pre-Qualifiers and registration for those opportunities began Sunday, February 14 at 8:00 a.m. CST. The Pre-Qualifiers will be held on April 14 at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, TX and at The Club at Comanche Trace—Hills/Creeks course. Interested professionals and amateurs can register by visiting: www.stpga.com and clicking on the tournament tab.

The 94th edition of the Valero Texas Open is scheduled for April 21-24, 2016 at TPC San Antonio. Jimmy Walker is expected to defend his title. In 2015, he shot a final-round 70 to defeat fellow Texan Jordan Spieth by four strokes.
