Charley Hoffman

Charley Hoffman, who began the final round two strokes back, birdied his 72nd hole Sunday to hold off a hard-charging Patrick Reed and claim a one-stroke victory, his fourth on the PGA TOUR, in his 293rd TOUR start at the age of 39 years, 3 months and 28 days.

Hoffman previously won the 2007 CareerBuilder Challenge, 2010 Deutsche Bank Championship and 2014 OHL Classic at Mayakoba. He has come from behind now en route to all four victories.

With the win, Hoffman collects 500 FedExCup points and jumps from No. 92 in the FedExCup standings to No. 18 with 818 points. It took 458 points to qualify for the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup in 2014-15, 554 to qualify for Deutsche Bank Championship, 692 for BMW Championship and 1,062 for the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola.

Hoffman was making his 11th-consecutive start at the Valero Texas Open, where he has now claimed five top- 10 finishes. He narrowly missed the top 10 last year, finishing T11. Hoffman has never missed a cut in the Valero Texas Open and has finished outside the top 15 only once (T70/2008). His top-10 finishes; T8/2006, T9/2009, T2/2011 and T3/2013.

Hoffman is now 43-under-par at the Valero Texas Open since the event moved to TPC San Antonio in 2010.

Hoffman was making his 13th start of the 2015-16 PGA TOUR Season, where he was in search of his first top- 10 finish. His best showing of the season was a T11 at the Valspar Championship. Hoffman is coming off a T14 at last week’s RBC Heritage, where he was one shot back of the lead after 54 holes, but faded with a 75 on Sunday.

Headed into this week, Hoffman ranked 200th in final-round scoring average and had not posted a score on the last day better than 73 in his last six final rounds. His final-round stroke average of 74.75 was 5.02 shots higher than his first-round average and more than three shots higher than his second or third round scoring average. Hoffman becomes the 14th winner this season to come from behind in the final round to win (23 events). Last week, Branden Grace came from three strokes back to claim his first career PGA TOUR title at the RBC Heritage.

Since moving to TPC San Antonio in 2010, Hoffman becomes just the third winner to come from behind in the final round to win.

En route to his most recent win at the 2014 OHL Classic at Mayakoba, Hoffman came from three strokes back in the final round to win by one over Shawn Stefani with a 5-under 66.

Hoffman becomes the 14th Web.com Tour grad (2005) to win on the PGA TOUR through 24 events this season.

Hoffman becomes the 12th different player in his 30s to win on the PGA TOUR this season (13 wins). Of the last seven events on TOUR, Hoffman and 38-year-old Jim Herman (Shell Houston Open) are the only players older than 28 to win.

2015-16 PGA TOUR Season starts-made cuts-top 10s-wins: 13-10-1-1

Patrick Reed

San Antonio native Patrick Reed birdied his 72nd hole to put himself temporarily in a tie at 11-under-par with leader Charley Hoffman, playing in the same group. When Hoffman sank his birdie putt, Reed claimed solo- possession of second place.

Reed, who began the final round three strokes back, claimed the runner-up finish in his third start in the Valero Texas Open. In his first start of 2012, he finished T35. A year later, he missed the cut.

Reed opened the week with a 7-under 65 and was one stroke off Brendan Steele’s 18-hole lead. A 1-over 73 in round two left him four strokes off the pace.

Reed’s runner-up finish marks his eighth top-10 finish in 13 starts this season, and is his fourth in his last five starts. Reed also finished alone in second at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, where he was in defense of his title.

In Sunday’s final round, Reed hit 9 of 14 fairways in regulation, 10 of 18 greens and needed just 24 putts. In round one, Reed needed only 23 putts to complete his round.

>Chad Collins

With birdies on four of the last five holes, Chad Collins posted a career-best third-place finish Sunday. Collins fired a 3-under-par 69 that included six birdies and three bogeys, to post 10-under 278 and briefly hold the clubhouse lead.

This marks the sixth top-10 of Collins’ career, with his previous-best finish being a T4 at the 2010 OHL Mayakoba Classic. Collins earns 190 points towards the FedExCup standings, jumping from 202nd to 132nd.

The Valero Texas Open has treated Collins well in the past. In four starts now, he’s finished top-30 three times, with a T19 in 2008 and T26 in 2014.

In 13 starts in 2015-16, Collins had made the cut four times with a T47 at the Puerto Rico Open as his best finish of the season.

Kevin Chappell

Making his seventh start in the Valero Texas Open, and sixth-consecutive, Kevin Chappell made five birdies and one bogey in the final-round, good for a 4-under 68 and tied for fourth.

Chappell’s best finish in the event is a T2 in 2011.

Chappell was in search of his first career PGA TOUR win in his 153rd start on the PGA TOUR. In 12 starts this season before this week, Chappell had collected a pair of solo-second-place finishes, The RSM Classic and Arnold Palmer Invitational. He is coming off a T9 finish at last week’s RBC Heritage.

Ryan Palmer

Texas native Ryan Palmer birdied his last two holes Sunday to post a 3-under 69 and claim a share of fourth place.

Palmer was making his 14th start in the Valero Texas Open, and 13th-consecutive. Each of his three top-10 finishes in the event have come since the event moved to TPC San Antonio in 2010; 2010/T9, 2015/T6 and 2016/T4.

Palmer was in search of his fourth career PGA TOUR title, having previously won the 2004 Children’s Miracle Network Classic (Disney World), 2008 Ginn sur Mer Classic in Florida and 2010 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Palmer’s fourth-place finish this week marks his first top-10 finish in 12 starts this season.

Martin Piller

Making his 10th start of the 2015-16 PGA TOUR Season, Dallas resident Martin Piller’s four-sub-par scores of 70-68-71-70—279 (-9) to finish T4 and earn his first top-10 finish on the PGA TOUR in 35 starts. His previous- best showing is T19 from the 2015 Barbasol Championship.

Piller made his return to the PGA TOUR for the 2015-16 season by virtue of his 5th-place finish on the 2015 Web.com Tour priority list.

While Piller was claiming his top-10 finish in San Antonio, his wife Gerina was competing in the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic, where she was in the top-10, but still playing when he finished.

Ricky Barnes

In search of his first career PGA TOUR win in his 222nd start, 54-hole leader Ricky Barnes struggled in the final round, posting a 2-over 74 and finishing tied for fourth. This marks Barnes’ 15th top-10 finish since joining the TOUR in 2009.

Among active players on the PGA TOUR, Greg Chalmers has made the most starts on TOUR without a win (384).

Barnes’ career-best finish is a T2 at the 2009 U.S. Open, where he held sole possession of the 54-hole lead but shot a final-round 6-over 76 to fall by two shots to Lucas Glover. The last time Barnes held the 54-hole lead was at the 2015 Barbasol Championship, where he held a share of the lead with Scott Piercy, but finished five shots back in a tie for third after a final-round 70.

Like Kevin Chappell, Barnes’ is coming off a T9 finish at last week’s RBC Heritage. In 16 starts this season, Barnes now has three top-25 finishes.

2011 Valero Texas Open champion Brendan Steele, who held the 18- and 36-hole leads, struggled in round three, posting a 3-over 75 and finishing T13. He remains in search of his second TOUR title.

In the season’s first start, Steele held a one-stroke lead after 54 holes at the Safeway Open, before a 4- over 76 Sunday resulted in a share of 17th place.
