Valero Texas Open E-Notes For April 14, 2016

Matt Kuchar Commits: Fresh off a tie for 24th finish at the Masters Tournament, Matt Kuchar is the latest world class player to commit to next week’s Valero Texas Open. Kuchar, currently ranked 28th in the world, has one of the best individual records at the VTO for a player who has not won the tournament. The seven-time TOUR winner will be making his 12th start in the tournament next week. Since 2012, Kuchar has finished T13, T22, T4 and T15 in four consecutive starts at TPC San Antonio. His best finish in the tournament was a tie for second in 2001.

Field Update Part II: In addition to Kuchar, four-time major champion Ernie Els committed today. Els, winner of 19 PGA TOUR titles, will be making his third start in San Antonio and first since 2014. His best finish in the VTO was a T3 in 2010. Also committing today are multiple PGA TOUR winners Hunter Mahan, Stuart Appleby and Camilo Villegas. Mahan will be returning to the VTO for the first time since 2006. He has played in the tournament five times since 2002 with his best finish a T5 in 2004. He is a six-time winner on the TOUR, including the 2012 Shell Houston Open. Appleby will be making his fifth start and Villegas his fourth.

Champion Update: The Masters Tournament was a good week for Jimmy Walker, who won the Wednesday par-three contest in record fashion and then finished tied for 29th in the tournament. It was Walker’s third consecutive start at Augusta National, where he has finished T8 in 2014 and T38 in 2015 prior to this year.

Monday Qualifier Reminder: For the first time, the Open Qualifying for the Valero Texas Open will be held on property at the TPC San Antonio—AT&T Canyons Course on April 18th. This will be the final chance for players – not otherwise exempt – to qualify for the Valero Texas Open, which is held on the adjacent TPC San Antonio—AT&T Oaks Course. Eighteen-hole Monday qualifier competitions are held each week at PGA TOUR open tournaments and award the top four competitors a spot in the tournament’s final field of 156 players. Southern Texas PGA officials and VTO Tournament officials will be present to recognize the four players who earn spots into the tournament.

Did You Know?: 2014 Valero Texas Open champion Steven Bowditch has held the lead going into the final round in both of his PGA TOUR victories, which also took place in the state of Texas. He held a three-stroke lead after 54 holes when he won the VTO and last year had a two-stroke lead heading into Sunday when he won the AT&T Byron Nelson in Dallas.
