Valero Texas Open E-Notes For April 6, 2016

G-MAC Commits: Graeme McDowell is the latest major championship winner to commit to the Valero Texas Open, April 21-24. McDowell, winner of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba during this current season stretch, will be making his second start in San Antonio. Last year, he had to withdraw in the first round due to injury. McDowell, the 2010 U.S. Open champion, is currently ranked No.63 in the world. He is the eighth major championship winner and the fifth champion of the 2015-2016 season in the field at this point.

Masters Week: Six past champions of the Valero Texas Open will be competing in this week’s Masters Tournament—Jimmy Walker, Steven Bowditch, Adam Scott, Zach Johnson, Mark O’Meara and Tom Watson. It is also interesting to note that a total of ten players have won both the VTO and the Masters through the years, including Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Jack Burke, Jr., Arnold Palmer, Ben Crenshaw, Watson, O’Meara, Johnson and Scott.

The Herman Story: Jim Herman, winner of the Houston Open on Sunday, is also scheduled to compete in the Valero Texas Open in less than 14 days. Herman’s emotional and courageous victory in Houston captured the hearts of many sports fans as he battled down the stretch for a one-stroke victory over a stellar group of players that included World No.6 Henrik Stenson. It was Herman’s first PGA TOUR victory in 106 starts and earned him a spot in this week’s Masters Tournament.

Did You Know?: The last player to win four consecutive events on the PGA TOUR was Jack Burke, Jr. The Texas native did so in 1952 and he started the streak by winning the Texas Open followed by the Houston Open, Baton Rouge Open and St. Petersburg Open.
