A Time for Thanksgiving
Image

We are nearly two weeks away from satisfying our cravings for turkey, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, rolls, cranberry dressing, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and whatever else we can find at the dinner table. While over indulging in delicious food and being around the smiling faces of our loved ones is awesome, we want to take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate a day of Thanksgiving.

The Valero Texas Open staff is grateful for the volunteers that come from near and far to contribute their time and energy, the members of the media who help tell our story around the world, the generous sponsors who support the Tournament and its charitable mission, the PGA TOUR players and their families who travel to Texas to compete and provide excitement to our fans, the spectators who cheer on and support one of San Antonio’s oldest traditions, and the charities who offer compassion and care for those in need throughout our community.

Each of us plays a vital role in making the tournament a huge success. Together, we are the Valero Texas Open family and we are grateful to have you a part of it. Happy Thanksgiving!

The annual fundraising campaign previously known as Birdies for Charity; now Champions fore Charity, is presently underway.

The fundraising platform provides nonprofit organizations with an unique and engaging way to solicit donations while keeping 100% of the funds raised plus incentives, including a 7% matching gift opportunity provided by the Valero Texas Open.

Individuals and corporations from anywhere around the world are encouraged to participate and support their favorite cause through Champions fore Charity while knowing contributions are tax deductible and are maximized through the financial incentives the Valero Texas Open provides to participating organizations.

In 2019, the Valero Texas Open’s Champions fore Charity campaign set a new fundraising record of $6.8M which contributed greatly to the tournament’s overall charitable fundraising total of $15M.

We are thankful for our charities and donors. Donors are champions fore supporting charities. Charities are champions fore supporting our community. Registration is still open for prospective charities and schools looking for no-cost fundraising opportunities. To learn more and donate to your favorite charity and/or school visit, www.championsforecharity.com.

In the spirit of the rebrand and new name to Champions fore Charity, we were honored to have Defending Champion Corey Conners and our 2015 Champion, Jimmy Walker in attendance to help launch the 2019-2020 campaign alongside program Ambassadors Randy Carroll of KJ 97 & David Chancellor of News 4 San Antonio.

Thankful For Our Volunteers

StarNineteen (19) years with Valero Texas Open
StarBroadcast Committee (camera crew-coiler, driver, mic operator & spotter/scorer)

JP’s positive attitude, reliability (never has been late or missed a volunteer shift) and years of committee knowledge do not go unnoticed by the Broadcast Committee leadership and our Network Television Partners (NBC Sports/Golf Channel). During this past tournament, the Broadcast Committee Chair rewarded JP with the opportunity to walk with the marquee pairings on Saturday and Sunday. Those who interact and work with JP always notice his selflessness and the passion he exhibits during his shifts.

According to JP, the most rewarding part of being involved with the Valero Texas Open is the fellowship he has with his committee and knowing, that in a small way, he helped to contribute to the many charities that benefit from the tournament. When describing his volunteering experience to individuals not familiar with the event, he explains that being outside for four days on some of the “most awesome and beautiful scenery they might ever see” is such an enjoyable experience. However, the most significant benefit is knowing that you may have changed someone’s life with your acts of kindness (by volunteering time) because of all the charities that are supported by the Valero Texas Open.

StarFour (4) years with Valero Texas Open
StarAdmissions / Will-Call Committee

In the four years that Dave has been volunteering, he strives to make sure everyone has a fantastic experience when entering the grounds of the Valero Texas Open. Each day, well before the first bus arrives (and the sun comes up), Dave prepares his committee to greet our spectators and volunteers. Upon the arrival of the first bus of volunteers at the main entrance, he scans in each person’s credential with a welcoming smile on his face. This smile carries over to later in the morning when he starts greeting our spectators, sponsors, and guests. When the lines begin to form at the gate, and his committee is busy, his willingness to postpone taking a break or stepping into another area to help his fellow committee members provide uninterrupted customer services for our guests. Others on the Admissions/Will-Call committee call Dave’s leadership infectious. Leading by example, his fellow volunteers soon imitate the way he explains the bag/prohibited items policy, the friendly approach of passing out spectator guides or happily directing a lost individual to their destination.

Dave states that the camaraderie with his team members is his most rewarding part of being involved with the Valero Texas Open, and this is what brings him back each year. He would tell anyone not involved with the Valero Texas Open that the work initially felt may seem more than anticipated, but the reward of making the tournament successful by creating a great first impression is worth the effort.
